Welcome to the link compendium!
Oh hey hi
This is the link compendium, a page of useful/fun programs and websites (from here on out grouped together as software) that
i know of, organized in no particular order
The software in this list ranges from useful and life saving to silly and fun, and i'm sure you'll find something that you'll
definetly like
Before we get with the programs though, i'll have to adress two things real quickly
The score system
Alongside the name of each piece of software, you'll see a score that ranges from 1 to 5, this doesn't represent the quality of the software
since, as you'll see soon enough, making a universal rating system would be impossible
What it does represent is how appealing it can be to a random person, something that appeals to a niche and tiny
audience would get something closer to a 1, while something that can appeal to almost everyone would get something closer to a 5
The Tag system
Bellow every software description there will be a couple of tags that define what it does, what it's used for, and such
The tags are as follow
- music: Software dedicated to music in some way
- gaming: Softwware that's related to videogames in some form
- utility: Software that helps you in organazing, productivity, and such
- piracy: Self explanatory
- foss: Free and Open Source Software
- anarchy: Fuck the cops, troops and state lmao
- collection: Stuff like this site, collections of links that follow a certain theme
- perfectFive: Software that has a [5/5] rating
- webBased: Standalone websites that might have some insteresting stuff
- altSocial: Alternate social media sites
- acceptingDonations: Software that accepts donations in one way or another
Now, with that out of the way, here's the Link Compendium
These two programs are grouped together since they have exactly the same content, the difference being that, while Soulseek (commonly abbreviated as slsk) is the original client, it’s proprietary, and uses a Qt interface, on the other hand, Nicotine+ uses GTK and is fully open source, and i personally recommend the latter; keep in mind that whatever program you choose, you’re gonna need a slsk account, which you can get once you download any of the two programs
One thing to keep in mind is that the network has a loyal user base, and it’s encouraged to upload something to the platform, so if you have an old folder with music on it, or have a CD laying around in your house, it would be nice to upload it, even more so since users have the option to block anyone who hasn’t uploaded anything from downloading from them

Nightwave plaza is an ad-free, 24/7 vaporwave radio station, showcasing obscure artists and new experiences.
It's a really simple website with a focus on discovery and experimental music, ideal for when you're idling in the computer, doing something in the background, or whatever

A desktop client to surf the fediverse, Whalebird helps you manage multiple accounts in Mastodon, Misskey or Pleroma with a nice and simple UI and customization options
It’s really useful if you want to manage different accounts at the same time, since it provides you with a slick sidebar with all your different alts

Similar to Nightwave plaza, JSR Live is a 24/7 radio that doesn’t run ads, but unlike the former, this one has it’s identity centered around Jet Set Radio, and offers stations that go from just the OST from the games and ones inspired by it, to ones that vaguely have something to do with it’s themes of rebellion and anti-authority
Again, you can find new and interesting artists from genres such as lo-fi, reggae, balkan, etc, and in certain times of the year it even has seasonal events, such as christmas, summer time, and halloween

The admin is a conspiracy theorist kind of guy, it’s suggested to pay no attention to the flavor text at the bottom of the page or their twitter account
The go-to torrent client for everyday use, it became the standard thanks to it being open source, adless, and just really nice to use; if you use torrents in any way, you should be using that, no questions needed

WACUP is a media player meant to emulate Winamp as much as it's possible, it's as customizable and compact as you remember it to be, and has been my go to music player for quite a while now
I also had a great time with
Audacious, it's a valid option too

As politicians all over the world are bent in making trans people's life more and more difficult, many have resorted to starting HRT on their own
HRT Cafe is a website dedicated to cataloguing pharmacies across the world that sell the supplies needed to start HRT, as well as comprehensive guides to how it works, the risks, and such; it saved the lives of probably hundreds of people

The phrase “Free antivirus” always raises a few red flags, and rightfully so, but is safe and trusted (although not that used) by the computer security community
I often use it after i download something from a sketchy site to see if it doesn't have anything i should worry about

Privacy Tools is one of (if not the most) complete collection of private software alternatives and apps, covering from search engines, to social media, file encryption, e-mail, and so much more
It also shows important information about the program, such as if it's open source or not, how newbie friendly it is, the platform it supports, and so on; if you care about your privacy, go give it a visit

Donations are only taken in cryptocurrency
Raddle is an anarchy-focused Reddit alternative, and it houses both interesting theory, news articles, and memes
Even if you don't plan on joining the forum part, the wiki is a good resource for theory and miscelaneous stuff, i strongly reccomend ziq's (the site admin)
essay on free speech

Probably the most useful website in this compendium, AlternativeTo is a crowdsourced index of alternatives to all kinds of software, showing for each option if it's free, if it's open source, and short reviews
I mostly use the bare bones features, but users are able to create lists with software that can replace an entire company, follow a certain use, or whatever else; i'm sure you'll get good use out of it

Squat!Net is a site dedicated to help squatters organize via hosting websites, emails, and mailing lists, and has been doing so since 1997
It has a large selection of languages and supported countries, and it has it's own agenda called
Radar, used for organizing squatting related events

Two really complete indexes for trusted piracy sites, including personal picks, guides, reccomendations, and such
Those sites lead to more pirate indexes for you to check out, cross-reference, and such, i strongly reccomend both of them

An excelent website for people to try out any pronoun to see if they're comfortable with them, it asks you to input the pronouns in each way (subjective, objective, etc) and then generates a text with that in mind
A lot of people have trouble testing out new pronouns, either out of insecurity or just not having anyone that can help them out, so this can be a lifesaver
